Professor at the Sorbonne from 1936 to 1967, specialist in Hegel and Husserl, he was one of the principal introducers in France of Kierkegaard and Heidegger. Interned at Drancy then refugeed in the United States during the war, upon his return he led the Collège philosophique. Also a poet.
