Professeur à la Sorbonne de 1936 à 1967, spécialiste de Hegel et Husserl, il fut l'un des principaux introducteurs en France de Kierkegaard et de Heidegger. Interné à Drancy puis réfugié aux États-Unis pendant la guerre, il anima à son retour le Collège philosophique. Également poète.
