Born in Alexandria on December 24, 1902, into the aristocracy of the Jewish community of Egypt (son of Baron Félix de Menasce, head of the Jewish community of Alexandria). A polyglot, he became a leading Iranologist, specialist in Pahlavi texts and Zoroastrian literature, director of studies at EPHE (1949–1970). He devoted nearly twenty years to the Dēnkart.
