Born in the casbah of Constantine in a Berber Jewish family, he came to Paris in 1930 to study philosophy. He began painting in 1941; from 1945 he developed lyrical abstraction influenced by the CoBrA group. He became established in the 1950s as one of the major representatives of the « New School of Paris ». Died in Paris in 1960.
