Né dans la casbah de Constantine dans une famille juive berbère, il gagne Paris en 1930 pour étudier la philosophie. Il commence à peindre en 1941 ; à partir de 1945 il développe une abstraction lyrique influencée par le groupe CoBrA. Il s'impose dans les années 1950 comme l'un des représentants majeurs de la « Nouvelle École de Paris ». Mort à Paris en 1960.
