Son of Solomon Loeb (co-founder of the Kuhn, Loeb & Co. bank), of German Jewish descent. Retired from business in 1901 for reasons of health, he devoted himself to classical scholarship and philanthropy. In 1911 he founded and endowed the Loeb Classical Library, a bilingual series of Greek and Latin classics.
