Born in Fürth in a modest Jewish family of merchants, he became one of the most widely read and translated German novelists of the interwar period. Friend of Rainer Maria Rilke and Thomas Mann. His autobiographical essay "Mein Weg als Deutscher und Jude" (1921) analyzes the tension between his German and Jewish identities. His books were publicly burned by the Nazis.
