French mathematician, he proved in 1896 (independently of Charles-Jean de La Vallée Poussin) the prime number theorem. His name remains attached to Hadamard matrices and several theorems of analysis. Engaged in the Dreyfusard camp (the wife of Dreyfus was the daughter of a cousin of his father), he lost two sons in the Great War and had to flee to the United States during the Second World War.
