Rabbin américain né à Kingston, en Jamaïque, le 22 mars 1827, et mort à New York le 12 septembre 1893, Henry S. Jacobs étudia sous la direction du révérend N. Nathan à Kingston avant de rejoindre les États-Unis en 1854 comme rabbin de la congrégation Beth Shalome à Richmond, en Virginie. Il occupa ensuite les rabbinats de Charleston (1858-1862), de La Nouvelle-Orléans (1866-73) puis de New York (Sheʼerit Israël, 1873-74 ; B'nai Jeshurun, 1874-93), et reçut le titre honorifique de docteur en théologie en 1900.
