Rabbin américain d'ascendance séfarade anglaise, né à Kingston, en Jamaïque, le 24 septembre 1834, et mort à Philadelphie le 14 juillet 1884, George Jacobs émigra aux États-Unis en 1854, officia pour la congrégation Beth Shalome à Richmond, en Virginie, et fut élu au rabbinat en 1857 ; en 1869, il succéda à Isaac Leeser à la tête de la congrégation Beth El Emeth de Philadelphie. Fondateur de la Young Men's Hebrew Association de Philadelphie, il collabora à la presse juive locale et participa à la révision du Prayer-Book de Szold et Jastrow.
