Physicien allemand né le 21 septembre 1801 à Potsdam et mort le 10 mars 1874 à Saint-Pétersbourg, Moritz Hermann Jacobi, d'abord architecte à Königsberg, fut nommé en 1835 professeur d'architecture à l'université de Dorpat, puis appelé en 1837 à Saint-Pétersbourg, où il devint membre extraordinaire de l'Académie des sciences de Russie en 1842 et membre titulaire en 1847. Son principal mérite fut la découverte de la galvanoplastie, en 1838, qu'il exposa dans « Die Galvano-Plastik » (Saint-Pétersbourg, 1840).
