Mathématicien allemand né le 10 décembre 1804 à Potsdam et mort le 18 février 1851 à Berlin, frère de Moritz Hermann Jacobi, Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi devint, après s'être converti au christianisme en 1824, privat-docent à Berlin puis à Königsberg, où il fut nommé professeur en 1829. Avec Abel, il fit ses découvertes majeures sur les fonctions elliptiques, exposées notamment dans les « Fundamenta Novæ Theoriæ Functionum Ellipticarum » (Königsberg, 1829) ; ses œuvres complètes furent publiées par l'Académie de Berlin en huit volumes (1881-91).
