Juriste puis écrivain. Après avoir publié des recueils de vers (Das Ufer, 1913 ; Erschütterung, 1920), il se consacre à la littérature quand le nazisme met fin à sa carrière d'avocat en 1933. Son œuvre majeure, le recueil de nouvelles Der Gezeichnete (1936), dépeint la piété et les traditions des juifs ruraux du sud de l'Allemagne. Il fuit vers New York en 1940.
