Israeli mathematician born in Kherson, immigrated to Palestine in 1912. Doctorate from Göttingen (1929) under the direction of Emmy Noether; professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Co-laureate of the first Israel Prize in exact sciences (1953) for his work on noncommutative rings; the "Levitzki radical" bears his name.
