Fils de Moses de Chaves, riche marchand d'Amsterdam. Élève du poète et kabbaliste Moïse Ḥayyim Luzzatto, qui publia son drame « La-Yesharim Tehillah » à l'occasion du mariage de Jacob avec Rachel de Vega Enriques en 1743.
