Born in Łódź (Poland) in a Jewish family emigrated to England. Doctorate in mathematics from Cambridge, he worked for the National Coal Board then became resident fellow of the Salk Institute (San Diego) in 1963. He conceived and presented the BBC documentary series The Ascent of Man (1973) and the eponymous book, one of the great works of twentieth-century science popularization.
