Prédicateur russe connu comme le Maggid de Dubno, né à Zietil, dans le gouvernorat de Vilna, vers 1740 et mort à Zamość le 18 décembre 1804, Jacob ben Wolf Kranz prêche dès dix-huit ans à Międzyrzecz, puis successivement à Żółkiew, Dubno, Włodawa, Kalisz et Zamość, avant de rejoindre Vilna à la demande du Gaon Élie, en convalescence. Orateur d'une éloquence sans égale, il illustre ses sermons de paraboles tirées de la vie quotidienne ; ses œuvres, publiées après sa mort par son fils Isaac Kranz et son élève Abraham Bär Plahm, comprennent l'« Ohel Ya'aḳob », commentaire du Pentateuque, le « Ḳol Ya'aḳob » (Varsovie, 1819) et le « Sefer ha-Middot » (1862).
