Né à Zembin (gouvernorat de Minsk), il commence à publier adolescent puis s'installe à Minsk en 1920 où il devient rédacteur de revues littéraires yiddish (Shtern, Oktyabr). Son poème épique « Minsker blotes » (1925) peint la transformation du shtetl par la Révolution. Au sommet de sa notoriété, il est arrêté et fusillé lors des purges staliniennes en octobre 1937 avec une centaine d'autres intellectuels de la république.
