Born in Zembin (governorate of Minsk), he began publishing as an adolescent then settled in Minsk in 1920 where he became editor of Yiddish literary journals (Shtern, Oktyabr). His epic poem « Minsker blotes » (1925) depicts the transformation of the shtetl by the Revolution. At the height of his fame, he is arrested and shot during the Stalinist purges in October 1937 with about a hundred other intellectuals of the republic.
