Born in Manchester into a family of Lithuanian Jewish origin. Brother-in-law and partner of Simon Marks, he co-directed the development of Marks & Spencer. After the death of his son Daniel (age 17), he endowed in 1934 the Daniel Sieff Research Institute in Rehovot, created by Chaim Weizmann, renamed Weizmann Institute of Science in 1949.
