Petit-fils et élève de Joseph ben Hayyim Hazan. Nommé au tribunal rabbinique de Jérusalem en 1842, il exerça ensuite à Rome, Corfou et Alexandrie. Il fut l'un des penseurs séfarades les plus influents du XIXᵉ siècle.
