Tanna de la fin du Ier et du début du IIe siècle, descendant d'une riche famille sacerdotale de Haute-Galilée et sans doute petit-fils du grand prêtre homonyme, Ismaël ben Élisha est emmené captif par les Romains dans sa jeunesse avant que Josué ben Ḥananya n'obtienne sa libération et ne le ramène en Palestine, où il devient un érudit accompli et son ami proche, qui l'appelle « frère ». Connu pour sa bienveillance, il prône l'indulgence envers les vieillards, répond avec calme à l'insulte comme à la bénédiction, et pourvoit dot et vêtements aux jeunes filles pauvres pour qu'elles trouvent un mari ; il siège parmi les membres éminents du Sanhédrin de Yavné puis d'Usha.
