Fils aîné d'Abraham et de sa servante Agar, né alors que son père avait quatre-vingt-six ans ; Dieu promit qu'il engendrerait douze princes et deviendrait une grande nation. Circoncis à treize ans, il fut chassé avec sa mère dans le désert après que Sara l'eut vu se moquer d'Isaac, mais un ange sauva sa vie en révélant à Agar un puits ; devenu archer habile, il s'établit dans le désert de Parân, où sa mère lui choisit une épouse égyptienne. Il assista, avec Isaac, aux funérailles d'Abraham, et mourut à cent trente-sept ans, laissant douze fils, ancêtres de douze tribus.
