French rabbi of the second half of the 14th century, also called Astruc of Savoy, remembered for his controversies and the divisions he provoked among French communities. Provided with a mandate from R. Meïr ha-Lévi of Vienna conferring supreme rabbinical authority upon him, he attempted to subject all the Jews of France to his jurisdiction and attacked the chief rabbi Johanan ben Mattithia, whom he sought to oust. Johanan brought the matter before the rabbis of Catalonia — Ḥasdaï Crescas, Sheshet and Moïse Halawa —, who entirely supported him and severely blamed Isaïe; the expulsion of the Jews of France, which occurred shortly after, presumably ended these rivalries.

ISAIAH BEN ABBA MARI (aussi appelé Astruc de Savoie)

This entry is not yet translated: it is shown in French.
