Isaacs, Sir Henry Aaron

Former Lord Mayor of London, born in that city on August 15, 1830. He devoted a quarter of a century to the interests of the city, advocating for the improvement of housing for the poor and contributing to the reforms of the municipal finance commission; appointed president of the City lands commission in 1859, he also played a decisive role in the realization of Tower Bridge. Sheriff of London and Middlesex then ennobled in 1887, he was elected Lord Mayor in 1889 and subsequently published his « Memoirs of My Mayoralty ».

Ancien Lord-maire de Londres ; né dans cette ville le 15 août 1830. Pendant un quart de siècle, il s'employa au mieux des intérêts de la ville de Londres. Il se battit pour l'amélioration des habitations des pauvres et fut principalement l'artisan de réformes très nécessaires à la commission des finances de la corporation. En 1859, il fut nommé à la présidence du City Lands Committee. Quelques années plus tard, à la tête du Markets Committee, il apporta des témoignages précieux devant la Chambre des communes ; et le Tower Bridge dut son existence, dans une large mesure, à sa persévérance. Sur le système oral d'enseignement aux sourds-muets, sa brochure « Sounds Versus Signs » est une autorité reconnue.

En 1887, Isaacs devint shérif de Londres et du Middlesex, et fut anobli la même année. En 1889, il fut élu Lord-maire de Londres. Il a publié « Memoirs of My Mayoralty ».
