Rabbin et journaliste né à Leeuwarden, en Hollande, le 4 janvier 1804, et mort à New York le 19 mai 1878. Après avoir dirigé l'ancien Neweh Ẓedeḳ (aujourd'hui l'hôpital et orphelinat juif de West Norwood, Londres), il quitta l'Angleterre en 1839 pour le ministère de la congrégation B'nai Jeshurun de New York, où ses sermons réguliers en anglais faisaient figure de nouveauté. En 1847, il devint ministre de la congrégation Shaaray Tefilla, qu'il conserva jusqu'à sa mort ; il fonda en 1857 le « Jewish Messenger », qu'il dirigea jusqu'à la fin de sa vie, et fut à l'origine du Board of Delegates of American Israelites, de la Hebrew Free School Association et de la United Hebrew Charities.
