Inventeur américain de l'époque coloniale et révolutionnaire, mort en 1798, établi à Newport dès 1755. En 1790, il offrit à Washington, en visite à Newport, une bouteille d'eau dessalée obtenue par son procédé ; l'année suivante, en 1791, il présenta à la Chambre des représentants une pétition proposant de céder à l'État les droits sur son procédé de dessalement, dont l'examen fut confié à Thomas Jefferson.
