Born into a Sephardic Jewish family of the Ottoman Empire, graduate of the University of Istanbul (classical letters), polyglot (French, German, Turkish, Ladino, Greek and classical Latin). Ordained rabbi at Hebrew Union College (Cincinnati, 1956), doctor in semitic studies from the Sorbonne, he teaches there Aramaic, Arabic, Syriac and Hebrew. Prolific author (biblical philological commentaries, studies of Ladino and Ottoman Turkish).
