Last nagid of Egypt (in Cairo), in office from 1502 until the Ottoman conquest of 1517 which ended the neguidat. Though of Spanish descent, his direct ancestors lived in Tlemcen (Algeria) from the 15th century. Patron of Talmudic studies, he also exercised his authority over the communities of Erets Israël (Jerusalem), where he died in 1525. He succeeded his uncle Nathan (Jonathan) Sholal, nagid from 1484 to 1502.
