Né à Thessalonique dans une vieille famille de rabbins séfarades, il étudia à Iéna, Berlin et Paris. Établi à Genève à partir de 1904, il y enseigna l'histoire de la philosophie européenne jusqu'à sa mort. Proche d'Henri Bergson dont il suivit les cours (1907–1914) et qu'il traduisit, il consigna leurs entretiens.
