Born in Thessalonica in an old family of Sephardic rabbis, he studied in Jena, Berlin and Paris. Established in Geneva from 1904, he taught the history of European philosophy until his death. Close to Henri Bergson whose lectures he attended (1907–1914) and whose works he translated, he recorded their conversations.
