Born in Valencia in 1326, he studied in Barcelona under Nissim ben Reuben (RaN), became rabbi of Saragossa and then, after the persecutions of 1391, settled in Algiers where he died in 1408. He is one of the greatest Sephardic decisors; his 417 responsa (She'elot u-Teshuvot ha-Ribash) are of great authority (cited by Joseph Caro) and a major historical source on Jewish life of the 14th century.
