Talmudiste du XIIe siècle, maître de Rachi. Originaire de Lorraine, il s'installa très tôt en Allemagne où il étudia sous Éléazar ha-Gadol, avant de diriger successivement les écoles rabbiniques de Mayence puis de Worms — c'est dans cette dernière ville qu'il forma Rachi. L'une des plus grandes autorités talmudiques de son temps, il est l'auteur de commentaires sur le Talmud, dont certains sont cités par Rachi lui-même, et ses responsa sont dispersés dans plusieurs recueils rabbiniques.
