Philologue allemand né à Hambourg le 4 septembre 1792 et mort à Minden le 28 décembre 1847. Converti au christianisme en 1809, il étudie la théologie et la philologie à Helmstedt, Göttingen et Leipzig, avant de devenir enseignant d'État à Hirschberg en Silésie (1814) puis, en 1821, principal du gymnase de Minden, poste qu'il occupe jusqu'à sa mort. Il y introduit la gymnastique dans le programme scolaire en 1831 et divise l'établissement en sections littéraire et scientifique en 1840.
