Grand rabbin des Congrégations hébraïques unies du Commonwealth de 1967 à 1991, après avoir été grand rabbin d'Irlande et rabbin de la Fifth Avenue Synagogue de New York. Anobli en 1981, il fut le premier grand rabbin britannique à siéger à la Chambre des lords (Baron Jakobovits, 1988). Il est le fondateur de l'éthique médicale juive moderne.
