Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth from 1967 to 1991, having previously been Chief Rabbi of Ireland and rabbi of the Fifth Avenue Synagogue in New York. Knighted in 1981, he was the first British Chief Rabbi to sit in the House of Lords (Baron Jakobovits, 1988). He is the founder of modern Jewish medical ethics.
