Poète hébraïque autrichien né à Zloczow, en Galicie, en 1856. Après une formation talmudique, il mena une vie itinérante entre Vienne, Constantinople et la Palestine aux côtés de Laurence Oliphant, puis l'Angleterre après 1888, avant de s'installer aux États-Unis en 1892, où il vécut notamment à Boston, Chicago, San Francisco et Los Angeles. Il doit sa réputation à ses recueils de vers hébraïques « Barḳai » (1877-99), dont le plus célèbre poème, « Ha-Tiḳwah », exprime avec force l'espérance sioniste et fut adopté comme hymne national des sionistes.
