Born Iehiel-Leyb (Ilya) Faynzilberg in Odessa in 1897 in a Jewish family. With Evgueni Petrov, he co-wrote the satirical novels The Twelve Chairs (1928) and The Golden Calf (1931), featuring the con man Ostap Bender, as well as the travel narrative America at One Storey. Died of tuberculosis in 1937.
