Né Iehiel-Leyb (Ilya) Faynzilberg à Odessa en 1897 dans une famille juive. Avec Evgueni Petrov, il co-écrivit les romans satiriques Les Douze Chaises (1928) et Le Veau d'or (1931), mettant en scène l'escroc Ostap Bender, ainsi que le récit de voyage L'Amérique à un étage. Mort de tuberculose en 1937.
