Rabbin et écrivain américain né le 2 janvier 1850 à Choinick, dans le gouvernement de Minsk (Russie), dans une famille hassidique. Formé au heder puis à la yeshiva de Vietka, il complète ses études à Francfort-sur-le-Main, Berlin, Breslau, Londres et Paris, avant d'enseigner dans les écoles de l'Alliance israélite universelle, notamment à Tétouan (1877-1880). Émigré à New York en 1880, il dirige les congrégations de Minneapolis (1880-1888) puis de Philadelphie (1888-1900), avant de se consacrer entièrement à la littérature à partir de 1900.
