Grammairien et philosophe, fils du martyr Don Joseph, né à Lisbonne en 1465 et mort en 1543, David ibn Yaḥya étudie auprès de son parent David ben Salomon ibn Yaḥya avant d'émigrer en Italie en 1496 ; devenu rabbin de Naples en 1518, il le reste jusqu'à l'expulsion des juifs du royaume en 1540. Soucieux de ses coreligionnaires, il obtient en 1533 la libération de prisonniers juifs amenés de Tunis à Naples, lance un appel à Gênes et en Lombardie, puis à Bologne en 1535, et tente en 1534 de conjurer le décret d'expulsion. Chassé de Naples, il meurt à Imola, laissant des œuvres de grammaire et de philosophie conservées par son petit-fils, le chroniqueur Gedalia ibn Yaḥya.
