Grand prêtre et prince hasmonéen né vers 175, mort en 104. Général habile, il se distingua en battant le général syrien Cendébée, victoire à laquelle la tradition rattache son surnom d'Hyrcan. À l'assassinat de son père Simon Maccabée par son gendre Ptolémée, il échappa à une tentative de meurtre et fut accueilli à Jérusalem comme successeur de Simon en 135. Assiégé ensuite par le roi syrien Antiochus Sidétès, affaibli par le manque de vivres, il négocia une paix onéreuse — reddition des armes, tribut pour Joppé, otages, dont son propre frère — après une trêve de sept jours accordée pour la fête des Tabernacles.
