Écrivain hébraïsant né à Wilna, mort à Cracovie en 1812. Encore jeune, il se rendit à Buczacz, en Galicie, où il entama son « Sefer ha-Berit », qu'il put achever grâce à l'aide du mécène Nachman Reiss de Lemberg et publia anonymement à Brünn, en Moravie, en 1797. L'ouvrage, œuvre encyclopédique mêlant sciences naturelles et philosophie d'une part, mysticisme et théologie de l'autre, connut un succès considérable jusqu'en Égypte, en Algérie et au Maroc ; après une édition non autorisée parue à Prague en 1799, Hurwitz en donna une nouvelle édition à Zolkiev en 1807, republiée sans changement à Wilna en 1811.
