Mathématicien allemand né le 26 mars 1859 à Hildesheim, formé à Munich, Berlin et Leipzig. Il devint privat-docent à Göttingen en 1882, professeur adjoint à l'université de Königsberg en 1884, puis professeur au Polytechnicum de Zurich en 1892. Il collabora à plusieurs revues mathématiques, notamment les « Mathematische Annalen » et les « Acta Mathematica », et fut élu la même année membre correspondant de la Société des sciences de Göttingen.
