Financier américain né à Zeckendorf, en Bavière, le 8 décembre 1832, mort à Grand Rapids, dans le Michigan, le 8 février 1892. Employé de commerce à Cincinnati puis dans d'autres villes après son arrivée aux États-Unis, il s'installa à Grand Rapids en 1852, où il devint propriétaire d'un commerce de vêtements puis se tourna vers le commerce du bois, acquérant une part importante de la ville. Vice-président de la City National Bank, il fut élu maire de Grand Rapids en 1872, réélu en 1874, siégea à la législature de l'État de 1871 à 1872, et représenta le cinquième district du Michigan au Congrès des États-Unis.
