Érudit polonais né à Lublin vers 1740, mort à Paris en 1812. Il quitta jeune son pays natal, vécut à Berlin, où il fréquenta Moses Mendelssohn, puis à Nancy, Metz et Strasbourg, avant de s'établir à Paris. En 1789, il obtint le poste de secrétaire-interprète des langues orientales à la Bibliothèque royale grâce à son « Apologie des Juifs », publiée la même année, qui attira l'attention de Mirabeau. Il se voua ensuite à la cause de la Révolution et à l'émancipation des juifs de France, publiant notamment une « Origine des Langues » en 1808.
