Joueur d'échecs et auteur né en 1809 dans le grand-duché de Mecklembourg, mort à Londres en 1885. Élève de Mendheim à Berlin, il fut l'un des « Pléiades », les sept chefs de file de la nouvelle école d'échecs berlinoise entre 1830 et 1840, avant de s'installer en Angleterre vers 1845, où il disputa la plupart des tournois jusqu'en 1862. Avec J. Kling, il publia « Chess Studies » à Londres en 1851 puis « The Chess-Player », et fit paraître son dernier ouvrage en 1884.
