Dramaturge judéo-allemand né le 7 Adar 1844 à Stanislau, en Galicie. Après une éducation juive traditionnelle et des études d'allemand, il fonde en 1876 un théâtre juif à Bucarest et se consacre dès lors à la scène juive, y introduisant le premier des actrices. Parti pour New York en 1884 avec sa propre troupe, il écrivit pas moins de 169 pièces, souvent historiques, puisant aussi ses sujets dans l'actualité, comme le massacre de Kichinev en 1903.
