Théologien allemand né à Hauingen, dans le pays de Bade, le 23 juin 1807, mort à Heidelberg le 22 janvier 1875. Formé auprès de Gesenius à Halle et d'Ewald à Göttingen, il enseigna à Heidelberg de 1830 à 1833 puis à l'université de Zurich, avant d'y revenir en 1861. Il consacra son œuvre à l'édition des livres prophétiques et poétiques de l'Ancien Testament, s'attachant toujours à déterminer l'auteur et la date de composition de chaque texte.
