Joseph Oakland Hirschfelder est un médecin américain né à Oakland, en Californie, le 8 septembre 1854, formé à San Francisco puis aux universités de Wurtzbourg, Berlin, Vienne et Leipzig, où il obtient son doctorat en 1876. De retour en Amérique, il s'installe à San Francisco et y développe une importante clientèle ; il devient en 1877 professeur de matière médicale à l'université du Pacifique, puis en 1881 professeur de médecine clinique, avant d'être élu en 1882 à la même chaire au Cooper Medical College.
