Ferdinand Hiller est un compositeur et écrivain musical allemand né à Francfort-sur-le-Main le 24 octobre 1811 et mort à Cologne le 10 mai 1885. Enfant prodige formé par Hofmann, Aloys Schmitt et Vollweiler, il joue un concerto de Mozart en public dès l'âge de dix ans et compose dès douze ans, puis accompagne son maître Hummel à Vienne. En 1828, il s'installe à Paris, où il enseigne à l'Institution de musique de Choron ; de retour en Allemagne, il dirige en 1836 les concerts du Cäcilien-Verein de Francfort, part en 1838 pour l'Italie, où son opéra Romilda est créé à la Scala de Milan en 1839, puis fait triompher à Leipzig son oratorio Die Zerstörung Jerusalems.
