Doctor of Warsaw University (trained under historian Majer Bałaban), he was appointed in 1937 director of the archives of the Jewish community of Warsaw, a position he retained in the ghetto. There he kept a journal focused on religious life, later published under the title « Diary of the Warsaw Ghetto ». Having escaped the ghetto in January 1943, he emigrated to the United States in 1950 and pursued a career as a Yiddish journalist and author in Brooklyn.
