One of the greatest masters of Judaism, president of the Sanhedrin. Founder of the school of Beit Hillel, he formulated the golden rule: "What is hateful to you, do not do to another — that is the whole Torah, the rest is commentary" (Shabbat 31a). His seven rules of interpretation found rabbinic hermeneutics.
