Israël Hildesheimer est un rabbin allemand, chef de file du judaïsme orthodoxe, né à Halberstadt le 20 mai 1820 et mort à Berlin le 12 juillet 1899, fils de R. Löb Glée Hildesheimer. Formé à l'école Hasharat-Ẓewi de Halberstadt puis, à dix-sept ans, à l'école talmudique du rabbin Ettlinger à Altona, il revient en 1840 à Halberstadt, obtient son diplôme au gymnase Dom et entre à l'université de Berlin, avant de poursuivre ses études à Halle sous Gesenius et Roediger, où il obtient son doctorat en 1844. De retour à Halberstadt, il épouse Henrietta Hirsch, puis est appelé en 1851 au rabbinat d'Eisenstadt, en Hongrie, où il fonde une école paroissiale puis une école rabbinique.
