Médecin arabe du XIIe siècle né à Bassora, il se rendit à Bagdad pour étudier la médecine auprès de Sa'id b. Hibat Allah, qui n'admettait ni Juifs ni chrétiens à ses leçons ; il soudoya le portier pour les suivre en cachette avant de devenir l'un de ses disciples les plus distingués. Devenu médecin ordinaire du calife Al-Mustanjid (1160-70) à Bagdad, il se convertit à l'islam à un âge avancé après avoir subi des insultes du fait de sa condition de Juif, devint aveugle et sourd, et mourut vers quatre-vingts ans ; il est l'auteur d'écrits philosophiques et médicaux, dont une traduction et un commentaire de l'Ecclésiaste composés en 1143.
