Michael Hess est un pédagogue et auteur allemand né à Stadt-Lengsfeld, en Saxe-Weimar, le 9 avril 1782, et mort à Francfort-sur-le-Main le 26 février 1860, frère de Mendel Hess. Destiné au rabbinat par son père, il étudie à la yeshiva de Fürth puis se rend en 1804 à Francfort, où il devient précepteur du jeune baron James von Rothschild, avant d'être élu en octobre 1806 directeur du Philanthropin, école juive nouvellement fondée à Francfort, poste qu'il occupe pendant quarante-neuf ans. Défenseur des droits de ses coreligionnaires et partisan d'une réforme radicale du judaïsme, il est l'auteur de nombreuses brochures pédagogiques, publiées de 1816 à 1852.
